Baroda Medical College (BMC) was established in 1949, envisioned by His Highness Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III and developed under Maharaja Pratapsingh Gaekwad. The foundation of the Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital in 1865 as Dufferin Hospital laid the groundwork for today’s 1,500-bed tertiary care center.

The college was inaugurated by Dr. M.D.D. Guilder, Health Minister of Bombay State, on 16 June 1949, with the first batch of 40 MBBS students. Its degrees were recognized by both the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the General Medical Council of Britain.
